Jr. Sailing End Of Season BBQ Minimize

On Friday, August 15th, Junior Sailing rounded out its summer sailing season with the annual trip to Breakwater Beach followed by a BBQ at the Club.  We were glad that the weather held out for the water park as well as the BBQ.  It was a busy and enjoyable day.

The BBQ, run by the Candice and Jack Hammond, was a great success with lots of food and tasty desserts.  After the BBQ our instructors presented the coveted “Most Improved” and “Instructor’s Award” paddles.  Corey Sherlock presented certificates to our Intro sailors acknowledging their completion of the first step in learning to sail.

Kevin Kenneally of the Beginner Opti class received the Beginner Race paddle.  The Most Improved Beginner Sailor paddle went to Summer Farren.  There was a tie for the Instructor’s Award:  The two paddles went to Patrick Kinneally and Roddy Rupp.  All the participants cheered enthusiastically for our up-and-coming sailors.  Andrew Cecchetti and Brent Lewis were very successful coaching this green group to be competitive and it was evident during the the Rookie Regatta, No Tears and the MYC interclub.  Our sailors performed superbly.

Our new Opti B instructor, Ali Iovanella, had a similar situation with her sailors and decided to award both Sophie Smith and Brianne Lauria with the Instructor’s Award and the paddle for Most Improved sailor went to Sarah Gallagher.  The Opti C/Blue Jay class awarded two paddles to Kirsten Barnes and Callie Commette for Most Improved and Instructor’s Awards, respectively. Alex Deitz and Collin Maher awarded the Opti A paddles to respectively, PJ Brown, Instructor’s Award and Joe Forlenza,  Most Improved.

In the 420 class, newcomer Caitlin Dennin received the Most Improved paddle, while Mike Gallagher, once again,  won the Instructor’s Award.  For his dedication and sportsmanship, Jack Murray received the Instructor’s Award from Ashley Love.  Dan Gallagher collected the third paddle for the Gallagher family for Most Improved Laser sailor.

Following the paddle awards, the instructors were given their special gifts, contributed by all the junior sailors and their families.  As well, gifts were given to the Jr. Sailing Coordinators, Jean Herrington, Clare Forlenza and Tim Smith.  Upon completion of all the ‘thank you's’ everyone enjoyed the Summer of 2008 Jr. Sailing DVD.  The DVD was a compilation of numerous regattas, interclubs and day-to-day activities that contributed to our memorable summer.  The kids absolutely loved watching themselves, especially on the new big screen!
