April 23 - Last
Races (Scroll Down For Final Results)
Several things happened on April 23rd. It was the last races of the Pram Series, Greg Deppeler was substituting for Bill Scheyer, June Kingman was her usual capable self, and Sandi Thomson had declared it to be "Hawaii Day" (evidently there is a theme for each sequence of races). At a hastily-called Skipper's Meeting, June and Greg (adorned in genuine imitation grass skirts) queried the sailors about Hawaii...specifically, when was it admitted to the Union, who were the President and Vice President at the time, and the bonus question ...who was the Secretary of State? At any rate, the Race Committee had decided to run the races as they might have been run in 1960, before the MRYC had acquired it's first Committee Boat, the infamous "Blue Blister". Races were run from the dock. Some starts were upwind, some downwind. And, for good measure, a buoy was placed inside the harbor, just to make matters more interesting and challenging, because Prams would be entering the harbor on starboard, and exiting on port...FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mike Heinrich Jr. adapted well to the concept of 1960, netting three firsts, a pair of seconds, a third and a fourth. Rob Zilai had a rather mercurial day, posting three firsts, a second, a fifth and a sixth...and then inexplicably sailing across the river to the old NJ Yacht Sales area where 2 barrel, now known as B barrel, is usually located. His cross county sojourn netted him a less than sterling DNF in the last race. When asked by Greg and Janet Davis after the race if he was ignorant or apathetic, Dick Carton heard Rob mutter "I don't know, and I don't care!" Rick Brown, having learned the hard way that sailing a Pram single-handed with only a main was, indeed difficult, brought daughter Torie along for crew. Unfortunately for Rick, Torie didn't bring a bucket of good luck, and he posted three fives, three sixes and a seventh. John Harkrader, with Sue Cundy aboard, scored a first, three seconds, two thirds, and a fourth. Janet suggested quite openly that she could've done substantially better. Ned Thomson, ably assisted by Clare Forlenza, wallowed all day within the grasp of abject mediocrity. He never did quite get the hang of the subtle nuances associated with the buoy in the harbor, and settled for a third, four fourths, a sixth and a seventh. John Dietz thought the trick of a throwback race was to throw himself to the rear of the fleet, much to the consternation of Tom Davis. Capitalizing on his brilliant thinking, John took three sevenths and a DNF, before realizing the error of his ways, and improving to a sixth, a third, and a fourth. Ah...and Tim Smith, with crew Tyler Hackett, did his best not to get in anybody's way, believing in the old credo that slow and steady wins the race. Well, he got half of it down pat, the slow part...achieving two fifths, two sixths and then ruining it with a second and two thirds. June and Greg were ably assisted on the dock by Marge and Mike Heinrich Sr. Marge stopped everybody who sauntered by, and did her level best to explain the difference in nomenclature between her husband ("I just call him Mike, except when I'm mad") and her son ("I just call him Michael, except when I'm mad") There will be a pop quiz on this explanation at the Fall Awards Dinner! Afterwards, a sumptuous repaste (translates
to delicious dinner) was enjoyed by all, and featured london broil, trimmings,
and a host of "blue slushies"...nobody quite knew what they were, but
they tasted wonderful! Submitted by Greg Deppeler March 19, 2006 - To Race Or Not To Race When we first got to the dock on Sunday, we were once again faced with the decision as to whether or not to cancel due to high NW winds. Ultimately we decided to race, and with only a few popped rudders and broken mainsheet-hardware mishaps, everybody made it back to the dock. From the git-go you could tell it was going to be exciting, with several of the boats literally planing to the start of the first race. Dick Carton and I decided to add a second patrol boat, so the ever-ready Entropy remained flipped on her gunnels for another two weeks, with a slightly diluted series lead. The racing was very close all day, with DaveCook taking the daily honors along with his Offshore crew Dennis Smith. The two posted an impressive four bullets and a total 19 points for their efforts. Ned Thomson and Clare Forlenza sailed consistently all day, and had the second best daily total. Mike Heinrich Junior came out once again, placing third for the day in Blotches, the family Toms River Pram. Tim Smith and Dave Kuykendall were right behind Mike for the day, and being one of the lighter crews, had a real workout keeping the boat upright and moving. It was a typical MRYC winter race... the wind was shifty, with some absolute holes in between 22knot puffs. Nine crews, seven races, great sausage and peppers afterwards... Thanks to Jack Woods and Nancy Wagner for being PRO's for the day, and to Don Loughran, Mike Cunningham, Sandy Thomson,Maryann Nordell, Susan Kuykendall, and everybody who helped us have yet another great day of winter racing. Rob Zilai, Vice Commodore MRYC March 5, 2006 - Canceled The sun was bright, the temperature warm, but the wind was gusting out of the NW 20 to 30 mph. While we stood around and pondered the situation, Mike Meseroll, anxious to sail, reefed his main and took his brave crew out for a spin. He quickly returned to ths dock shaking his head. "I almost capsized". No one complained when the RC canceled the races. We all hung out for a while, enjoying the day, and then went inside for a delicious St Patrick's Day dinner of Sandi's Corned Beef, Debbie's cabbage, Susan's boiled potatoes and Pat's Irish soda bread. Sandi served green cookies for dessert and Gary furnished the music. We departed well fed and looking forward to March 19th. Davek Feb. 19, 2006 Only four prams were available to sail on Feb. 19th, but the competition was still intense. There was not a whole lot of water in the river. In fact, at its peak it was still about a foot and a half below normal, so June and Jack had to set up just South of the channel, and we had to figure out a way to use the currents to our advantage. The wind was mostly from the Northwest, at an average of maybe seven knots... however there were numerous spot-shifts, and the overall range in wind velocities went from probably eighteen, all the way down to zero, if you happened by one of several "holes" in the racecourse. MRP 37 "ENTROPE'", sailed by Rob Zilai and Dick Carton never did figure out the start, but put up what they say was their first perfect series, winning all five races. The key was boatspeed, and deciding whether or not to dig-in to the shifts, or to quickly tack away. Tim Smith and Dave Kuykendall, sailing in MRP1 put up some good numbers, as did John Dietz in MRP19. Ned Thomson and Clare Forlenza had a few very good start/first-legs, but got caught in some of the pit-falls along the way. It was that kind of day...and it was, as we will all attest, COLD!!! we were harshly reminded during our first upwind leg that, yes, it is winter. That breeze could take a chunk out of your face! Anyway, nobody flipped, sank, or broke down, and if we had, there were two patrol boats watching... Bill Scheyer and Don Loughran were running around on the new 18' Center console BRRR, with Win Miller once again taking photos, and Quintin Danish with Mike Cunningham were patrolling in Aly Leigh. Thanks to all of you guys for keeping us safe out there. Sandy Thomson, Sue Kuykendall, and their willing crew provided us with Shrimp Creole, Salad, Lasagna, Corn Bread, and cupcakes and brownies. We all chowed down and debriefed in front of the fire for a while, then packed it in for another week. Thanks to everybody, and we'll see you out there next time. All of the prammers would like to extend our invitation to non-sailors, to come watch! Robz Feb. 5, 2006 Races canceled due to high winds. Jan. 22, 2006 - Chinese New Year June Kingman again one-upped herself by having "year of the dog" as this week's theme. The festivities began early with colorful streamers, firecrackers, sparklers, rockets, etc. for all the competitors.Commodore Nordell really got into the spirit of the moment, but the races had to be postponed mid-day so he could visit the fire hydrant at the end of Cedar Ave. It was the kind of a day where you could easily find yourself distracted by all of the ceremony... yes that's it...I was distracted... that's why I ran into two boats. Hey, I wasn't the only one involved in "vessel tag" out there. It seemed as though everyone out there was involved in at least one or more indiscretion, and the results prove that out. We had eight races again, and five different boats had at least one win. Mike Meseroll made his comeback presence known, registering three bullets to our two. Mike Heinrich Junior picked one up in the fourth race, sailing in "Blotches", the family Toms River Pram. John Harkrader took the tiller for Janet Davis and registered a first, as did John Deitz, with Tom Davis aboard. When we first went out it seemed as though we were going to have nice steady air from the East at about 8 Knots, but conditions got ugly and the wind was very tricky in by the lower 35 bridge where the weather mark was. A strong current made a port start almost impossible, especially once we realized that the air was a little stronger at the pin end of the line. The problem that developed was that you had to get over onto port pretty quickly, or get caught in the current. Add some strong roadway-induced downdraft-type shifts into the mix, and you have a real free-for all. But hey, it was warm enough, the cumquats (sp) and fortune cookies were flowing freely, everybody was smiling, and nobody had to walk their boats across the sandbar. The race committee had to be towed in because the boat ran out of fuel...N-E-F-E-R-T-I-T-I? Mary-Ann Nordell made up a batch of Barbecue-flavored pulled pork for after-race eating. Deb Zilai made up her famous "almost like the Lobster-Shanty" cole slaw. Tim Smith brought half of their house stock of apple sauce, and Nancy Wagner provided very delicious Rum-Lemon cake.MMMMMM. Ned Thomson didn't get out onto the race course due to some mid-season boat repairs, but was on the committee boat, and did the dishes. Thanks to Mike and Marge Heinrich, June, Jack Woods, Nancy Wagner, Carl, Bill,Gary, Don, and everybody else. Robz Jan. 8, 2006 Fine Westerly breezes, with 30 degree shifts, and the full gamut of velocities, and our ever-present tricky currents treated seven prams to eight challenging races. Mike Heinrich Junior jumped back into the drivers' seat of the family Toms River Pram, after maybe twenty years, and managed to stay with the fleet all day... with no jib and no crew. Greg Deppeler also made what could have been a triumphant return to the water, after who knows how long... Greg crewed for Janet Davis, and the two were right in the mix from the start. Yessiree, they were feeling so charged up that they pulled off a tricky port start in the non-phased oscillating 10-knot breeze for the third race, leaving us all shaking our heads in awe. Greg decided to pull out all the stops, and on the second upwind leg, finding themselves a bit behind MRP 37, tacking from port to starboard, he let the starboard-side running backstay go slack...I saw what looked like a laser mast with full-on vang pressure, maybe fourteen inches of mast-bend. So, just being the nice guy that I am, and realizing Greg hadn't been on a pram in a long time... if ever...I casually reminded him that an MRPram doesn't have running backstays, and that he should seriously consider re-attaching the sidestay before continuing the race. At this point I think they got all pissed and left the race course for a few races, presumably to go over some of the nuances of Pram hardware and the like. In the meantime Rick Brown and Ted Finkenauer were figuring out the tricky conditions, winning the fifth race and having a good overall day. John Deitz and crew Tom Davis also had a very good performance, being in the mix all day long. Newly seated Rear Commodore Ned Thomson and crew/ parttime skipper Clare Forlenza had a few fine races, making for close results in the overall picture. Congrats to Tyler Hackett, who made his crew debut in the Prams, sailing with Uncle Tim Smith, while Mom (the intrepid Robin Hackett) watched from the shore. Fortunately the State Police didn't happen by, because the Sisu was Packed with Committee, Judges, and other sundry parteers, while Commodore Nordell, Commadorable Maryannn, PC/photographeur Win Miller, and mainstay Don Loughran supplied patrol, rescue. Thanks to everybody... PRO Bill Scheyer managed to keep us out there until the last breath of air left the racecourse. While we were out, June Kingman's parents, Pat and John, were setting up for a surprise ?th birthday party, and Bill had instructions to keep her/us out there as long as possible...no problemo, said Bill. June was thoroughly surprised by the number of friends and family who attended, and we all enjoyed the great home-cooked dinner, and the enlightening replay of June's very early childhood. What else can I say.. another great winter afternoon on the Manasquan...Giants lost 23-zip! Thanks to everybody who made it happen. Rob Zilai (Photos by Win Miller) Jan. 1, 2006 - Hangover Regatta Although the race was a bit early for most, and we had to postpone for a bit, it was nevertheless another beautiful winter morning, as a light blanket of westerly breeze gradually poured over our glassy race course, which is extended on this special morning to encompass the whole basin between the 35 and soon-to-be-replaced 70 drawbridge. June Kingman brought Bloodies and "greasy-type" food to settle the stomachs and dull the senses. Some of us didn't really require this anti-keen treatment, in particular MRP 37, sailed this time by Rob Zilai, with Jack Woods crewing in the absence of New Past Commodore Dick Carton, who was obviously "chillin" in the hot tub after his two year hitch at the big helm at MRYC. Rob thought that, since he'd had zero sleep, the pint of Bourbon Jack had brought along was a perfect pick-me-up, and got off to a pretty good start, as did everybody. But, drawing from his forty plus years of Manasquan River sailing experience, then decided that for some reason the current wouldn't be too strong on the nose going through the slot between Brielle and Treasure Island (even though it has always been strong since the end of the last Ice Age). Mike Meseroll had a real nice start, and was never heard from again, pulling a horizon job on the fleet. I was so far back that I'm not even sure how the other boats finished! But I think that Ned Thomson, with Clare Forlenza at the helm, managed to stay within eye contact of Mes. We eventually managed to at least touch base with John Deitz and Janet Davis, and had a sort of B-fleet race toward the end. As it was last year, the conditions were as good as you could ever ask at this time of year, and the five boats were all well attended to by ample patrol. Debbie Zilai acted as first mate and spotter with Tim Smith on Aly-Leigh. PRO's Bill and June were on the Sisu with their crew, and newly installed Commodore Nordell was out on the new 18' Center Console, along with a full spectator crew. We had plenty of water in the river, and lots of time for de-briefing afterwards in the clubhouse. Thanks to everybody for coming out and making this another memorable, enjoyable first day.
